Reading the Times …
Posted by Joseph Riggio on Wednesday, August 30, 2006Knowing how to “read the environment/context” and knowing specifically what to do and how to do it will make all the difference in what outcomes you get ... or not!
Howdy Everyone,
Sometimes I find writing here a challenge and sometimes I find it a breeze. Usually, it depends on two things:
What I found particularly interesting today was the "outing" of U.S. Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK) regarding his so called "secret hold" on the Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act, S. 2590, originally introduced by Senators Barack Obama (D-IL) and Tom Coburn (R-OK).
One of the things that intrigued me most was that another senator, Senator Bill Frist, M.D., R-TN - U.S. Senate Majority Leader, began a movement on his blog at VOLPAC (Volunteer Political Action Committee - a group "Working to Elect Republican Candidates Throughout The Country") to uncover the "secret hold" by an unknown senator on the bill.
This bill was a bi-partisan effort to make evident the range of government spending by making it public knowledge. It initially seemed to be on "cruise control" towards being passed and then ... the secret hold preventing it from going to vote before the August recess of the Senate. What everyone publicly was saying was a great idea who's time had come ... was now tanked by a "hold" placed on it by an unknown senator.
So here goes Sen. Bill Frist on his blog calling for both other senators AND bloggers in a call to action to "out" the unknown senator (The Bright Light of Public Scrutiny). As a result of this effort Sen. Ted Stevens "hold" on this bill effectively single-handedly blocking passage in the Senate - of a bill everyone says they agree with in principal ... at least publicly ...
Another blog Muckracker.com referred to Sen. Ted Stevens, "Pork King," a reference to his pork-barrel spending voting record in the Senate ... yet his supposed reason for "holding" this bill was that the "Bill's Cost Troubled Me".
So here we have a story of triumph in terms of the success of this campaign to do exactly what this bill was designed to do ... make public the information that typically gets held behind closed doors and an utter failure of our system that allows individuals like Sen. Ted Stevens to behave so atrociously, conceivably under the impression no one would have ever found about what he had done. I find myself left with the question:
Well one thing I think I can point to would again be the work of Dr. Clare Graves. His work was built around the idea of an evolution of cultural values over time in societies across the planet. In the simplest terms I can use what Dr. Graves put forth was that as cultures evolve the environment/context they find themselves in evolve as well - in part due to their own evolution. The creates a situation in which the existing values they hold no longer serve them and so they evolve new values again evolving their culture and continuing the cycle.
So what does this have to do with Senator Ted Stevens "Pork King" and his "bad behavior"? Let's take two ideas that I think will shed some light on this for us:
I also want to add an important distinction, which I hold separate from the two ideas I presented above:
What Dr. Graves postulated was that people in the context of culture hold values that are specific to that cultural form and that guide them in their responses in that system. He further speculated that the mechanism for the cultural values evolution he described was akin to any other evolutionary survival mechanism. Specifically, that specific values sets would best serve those that hold them in specific environments/contexts where those specific values offer the most advantage.
I'm speculating that those values that best serve people like Senator Ted Stevens to get elected are the same values that generate what I've referred to as his "bad behavior" above.
In addition, these same values are those that are holding the environment/context in which these folks operate in place - and we are beginning to see the pressures of a significant values evolution emerging.
Essentially, these folks who are used to using the values that have been in place and have worked to generate the successes they have known to date, will no longer be able to generate the same successes using the same strategies they have in the past. Of course this applies beyond the confines of the American political arena as well.
In this small microcosm the other story has been demonstrated by the effect of the call to action by Senator Bill Frist vis-a-vis his request to bloggers to get the word out and create the response that they did. This action was based on a completely different set of values than those employed by folks like Senator Ted Stevens. In fact Senator Steven's "shame" was a result of a confrontation of values.
This confrontation of values has been emerging in different ways and at different levels across the planet for centuries ... however never at the speed or scope of that we are experiencing it today.
And, beyond that we are seeing the evolution of completely new "behavior sets" associated with new "values sets" that are emerging planet-wide.
As these new values sets continue to evolve and emerge the world we find ourselves living in will seem very different than the one we found ourselves born into.
Having the ability to recognize the range of values sets as well as those that are dominant in the environment/context in which you are operating in, or want to be operating in, will create the greatest opportunity for choosing the "behavior sets" that will work best in producing your outcomes in that environment/context.
Too bad for Senator Ted Stevens that he didn't learn this particular lesson sooner ... and too bad for all of us who would possibly have benefited had he. However, keep a lookout for more and more evidence of the growing "clash of values" that we are witnessing globally.

Reality … Or Just TV
Posted by Joseph Riggio on Tuesday, August 29, 2006Sometimes changing the game means first knowing what game you’re playing in ... then beginning to notice for what rules are in play ... and only then making decisions about what to be doing next ...
Mornin' All,
Okay everyone ... why don't we all come back to earth ... IF THE EARTH SURVIVES OF COURSE!
A course in "How Not To Advertise" follows:
I came across a note about GM's "Chevy Tahoe" interactive commercial campaign developed with "The Apprentice" television reality show recently. GM decided with some "advice" from the folks over at The Apprentice to create an interactive video advertising campaign for their "Tahoe" SUVs ("caveat consultor"). The premise was to allow people onto their website to build "custom ads" using the video clips and music supplied by Chevrolet and their own text.
Start here for an idea of what happened as a result:
As an example of viral marketing the "Tahoe" commercials have been a tremendous success ... thousands of people have become involved in the campaign, and many more than that have viewed the result. Of course the "message" created wasn't exactly what Chevrolet was hoping for I'm guessing ... but you be the judge.
This example points out how not to go about creating a community with intention ... or at least not attending to the potential outcomes you might be creating when you do.
Now I'm posing two questions to the folks as GM:
I'll point out two things about the questions I've posed above ...:
It makes little to no sense whatsoever to be considering where you want to be going before you know where you are. And my guess would be that GM wants to take their campaign somewhere other than:
"These folks (Chevrolet) are making the machines (Tahoe SUVs) that are killing the planet, and the folks who drive them are selfish bastards who simply don't care about anything or anyone but themselves."
Of course this was just my guess when I saw the commercials I've directed you to above. Yet let's presume me correct as we go on.
Typically the first thing that many people and most companies do when confronted with a situation like this one would be do find out "Who's to blame?" - because it has to be somebody's fault ... after all these things don't just happen! This serves zero value except possibly redirecting the attention away from one's self and saving one's proverbial ass (a much too common practice in business from my point of view ... perpetrated by those who begin by suggesting, "people should take more risks").
So, instead of moving towards what they want, tremendous energy, time and resources will be consumed looking backwards ... where we definitively know the desired outcome DOESN'T EXIST!. More importantly they'll often be doing this at the cost of moving forward to where they claim they want to be going. ... GET OVER IT!
Let's move onto the next point I make, the sequence of the questions. First, as I've pointed out above you'll want to know where you are NOW ... putting much more attention on this point than on how you got here. The ability to notice fully where you are will make a significant difference in both where you decide to go next and how you decide to get there.
What you'll want to develop will be the acuity to pick up the signals in the environment/context and the responses that these signals are generating - both in you and in others - remember, "It's just information/data - IT MEANS NOTHING!
Even the responses generated in you "mean nothing" before they are just responses ... information/data. You will want to notice what has happened and what continues to happen in an unbroken stream until you begin to get a sense of the continuum including where it will likely be going ... "the inherent pattern" ... that forms the basis of the skill of "adumbration."
Okay, you have:
You can now begin to think in relation to what you want to be doing next to shape the direction the system might take.
The question where do you want to be going next begins to make a lot more sense at this point ... only from here can you expect your responses to be coming from a place other than "knee-jerk reactions" and be based in a real sense of what could be possible given where you are ... i.e.: ""What's Next?"
Chevrolet's response:
The rules say any attempt to "undermine the legitimate operation of the contest may be a violation of criminal and civil laws." - c|net.com
You will not always be able to predict with accuracy what the result of your actions will produce, however you can always choose how to be responding in a moment to moment way ... taking the time to breath may make all the difference ...
INHALE ... EXHALE ... INHALE ... EXHALE ... continue ...

The Ancient Art of Success
Posted by Joseph Riggio on Monday, August 28, 2006Learning how to operate “in the future” based upon what I call the “Trajectory of INTENT” may be the most ancient art of success of them all - it seems the Chinese have know about this, well ... forever.
Good Morning,
As usual I'm scouting about the Internet checking the news of the day - as always more than I can possibly attend to let alone keep up with, so I do the next best thing - I selectively scan. Today I found an older posting on Apple's Blog, Report on iPod Manufacturing from August 17th.
Apple was informed of potential violations of their Supplier Code of Conduct in a manufacturing facility in China. So I thought I'd check it out. And, HOLY COW! what I find myself reading! About a "manufacturing facility" in China (where specifically in China wasn't mentioned) that supports over 200,000 employees!!! Can you even imagine this ... a "manufacturing facility" that supports over 200,000 employees?
I mentioned this to my wife and she said, "I think it's scary ... that's what we going to have to compete with." I understand that people respond this way when they hear this kind of information ... it can be a bit overwhelming (to say the least, eh?). However my response was, That's what we ARE competing with ... right now ... it's already happened!"
What I find so amazing about this ... a "manufacturing facility" that supports over 200,000 people, with factories, employee housing, banks, post office, hospital, supermarkets, recreational facilities, and thirteen different restaurants (in addition to the ten cafeterias on campus) ... has to do with how this happens in China. I've traveled to China for business and pleasure many times. One of the cities I've visited has been ShenZhen in Southern China - directly across from Hong Kong and linked by train to that city.
The Chinese government designated ShenZhen an Economic Special Zone in August of 1980 and began building up this city to accommodate what they believed would be a major exchange point, including an import/export hub. By the time I visited in late the 1990's ShenZhen had gone from an idea about what was possible to a small city in China of only about 5,000,000 people! That was within a period of about twenty years of sustained growth from a small regional village (a few hundred thousand residents at best).
Think about this ... the Chinese government "imagines" the way a "manufacturing facility" can be, or an "Economic Special Zone" can be ... and then they build it AND populate them with hundreds of thousands or even millions of people. I don't know if I could find a better example of operating against a "Trajectory of INTENT" on a large scale, a clear case of operating "telelogically."
This represents a radical shift in thinking ... the example above has nothing to do with basing the intention on pre-exisiting historical patterns ... the Chinese decided where they wanted to be, in spite of where they found themselves in the moment. Then based on the future intention held made their plans and took action to realize the outcome they had set.
I'm guessing a few people reading this may be saying to themselves, or even to others should they be discussing what I'm writing about above ... "So what? ... Isn't that how everyone sets goals, makes plans and takes actions to fulfill them? - - - NO! ... ABSOLUTELY NOT! Most people actually set goals first and foremost based on past evidence, NOT ... free of past evidence. Beyond that the planning and acting functions are carried out in relation to past evidence as well.
Operating "teleologically" demands freeing yourself of the demands and pull of "past evidence" ... while at the same time remaining open and sensitive to the current information/data in the environment/context indicating where the system will be going.
This almost defines the break in how I'm operating vs. how many models I've personally experienced are organized. The only absolute exception to this has been my ongoing experience and apprenticeship with Roye (Fraser). As I learned about his "Generative Imprint" model and then became familiar over time with using it as the basis for the work I do with people, it became more and more clear to me how distinct the essence of what I had learned truly was in comparison to some other models I'd come across.
I originally learned about Roye and the work he was doing in my search to continue learning NLP (neurolinguistic programming). In fact I originally went to Roye to continue my study of NLP. I learned from him to think from a different position.
NLP and the traditions associated with NLP ... hypnosis, gestalt therapy, family systems therapy or even "computer programming" ... are designed to address what doesn't work ... using a "problem-solving" approach ... based on a lens of limitations - what I was learning was to operate through a different lens, one based in possibility.
I must have heard a thousand times the distinction between these two approaches referred to by Roye as, "the inhibitory bias" - the lens of limitations, or "the excitatory bias" - the lens of possibility. This "simple" distinction changed my world! Later on I began thinking about this in terms of a "teleological approach" and began to develop what I now refer to as the Trajectory of INTENT.
It would be fair to say that I currently think of the "Trajectory of INTENT" as the basis for transformational success ... it underscores what I believe the Chinese government has done in the two examples I've written about above, separating themselves from the chain of evidence based in the past and constructing a completely new chain based upon where they want to be that doesn't exist yet.
I also think there are steps to take in establishing this kind of absolute separating and the limitation of the "past evidence" being imposed upon the future ... as though was has happened will be the determining factor for what will happen or worst what can happen:
Once you done this, and for all intents and purposes, only when you've done this ... and are ready to commit to what it will take to produce the outcome are you ready to begin. Now ... when you're ready to commit ... BEGIN!

Treating People Like Dogs
Posted by Joseph Riggio on Sunday, August 27, 2006Good Moring All,
First - I just wanted to take the time upfront to say thanks to all of you who have been taking the time to read what I've been writing here and also to those of you who've taken the time to comment or write to me directly as well.
I've been thinking about some of the things I've been writing here as well as some of the feedback I've been getting ...
One of the things I've been thinking about goes back to my days as a dog trainer. I remember well how we used to treat the dogs we were training. Simply put ... MOST EXCELLENTLY! If we only treated people this way I think we'd get much more of the outcomes we want and also enjoy the process of getting there a thousand times more.
Let me share a few of the steps in the process I used with dogs I trained:
(It never made any sense to think about asking our dogs to interact with us or especially to perform for us before we'd established a relationship with them)
(Almost any behavior could be elicited and encouraged using positive reinforcement, and then produced at will when desired)
(Unless we were clear with the dogs about what we wanted there was no way they could do what we were expecting ... and the most important thing this allowed us to do was to always be rewarding and praising our dogs for what they were doing, never basing our interactions on fear and punishment)
(The context exerts such a powerful influence on the performance that attending to it first and foremost virtually guaranteed getting the outcomes we wanted to be producing)
This last point really jumped out at me as I was considering this last night ...
By first putting our attention on generating the context where the performance we wanted was a natural result of being in that context ... getting our outcomes became virtually guaranteed!
Yet what I so often find attests to the opposite as often being the case - people putting their attention on how they aren't getting their outcomes, and by virtue of that sustaining the context that virtually guarantees they won't get their outcomes.
In my "previous life" as a dog-trainer I found that most folks called me only after they'd become hoarse from yelling ... "NO, NO, NO, NO ...! at the top of their lungs for a few days to no avail ... the rugs were still getting urinated on, the furniture was still being chewed, and guests could be virtually guaranteed to get jumped up on and find themselves with a cold, wet nose in their crotch.
In essence what occurs unintentionally leads to establishing and sustaining contexts that oppose what we actually want to be happening - both for ourselves and others. The simplest formula I can think of again comes from dog training. People notice first what they don't want ... we're neurologically "wired" to notice what we perceive as "threat" first. So the sequence that leads to our responses and behaviors typically begins by first noticing for what we don't want.
Beginning from what we don't want virtually guarantees that all of our attention will be on what we don't want.
"Where we put our attention is where we will get our results."
- Joseph Riggio, Ph.D.
One way we notice for what we don't want includes avoiding what we think of as "unfamiliar." This phenomena has been referred to as "cognitive dissonance" - and has been reported as generating a stronger negative response than considering our own death. Another way of thinking of this would be to say that: "more than anything else we want what we find familiar - even in comparison to considering our own death."
We could argue that:
Given the choice between doing something differently that you find unfamiliar to get a different outcome, and doing what you've always done even if it means continuing to get the outcomes you've gotten before but don't want ... you'd most likely do what you've always done.
This shows up clearly in the way people will argue for maintaining the context they are in, regardless of the impact it has on the outcomes they produce. One of the most commonest examples of this might be the phrase we've probably all heard:
"We've always done it that way."
People who challenge the "status quo" are referred to as "trouble-makers" and accused of "rocking the boat." ...
---> IMAGINE WHAT PEOPLE CALL THOSE WHO TURN THE BOAT OVER!!!
Yet, what I've found myself doing more and more as my knowledge, skills and experience have increased has been becoming more and more of a "Boat Turner-Overer" - especially when it comes to turning over the boats of "context." I've also found consistently that people won't turn over the boats of their own lives without considerable discomfort or by working with a professional they've come to trust first.
It only makes sense, a professional you trust can hold the context in place for you before you are able to for yourself, making it seem comfortable and familiar even before it has become so for you - a "guide" or "mentor" in the mythological context. I learned this as well in my years training dogs and working with their owners - when I was present the dog could and would perform brilliantly, only when the owners could establish and hold the space I had created with and for the dog would they get the same performance.
Usually what I find myself doing first with my clients starts with generating the context in which the outcome becomes possible just as a function of establishing the context - usually by turning over the boat of comfort and familiarity. Of course it takes practice to recognize how to do this and set the context in which the outcome becomes a natural function of the context that's been generated - but learning how to do that "virtually guarantees getting the outcomes you want" - and given that it seems to be more than a fair trade-off in terms of what it takes to learn how.

Remembering The Good Times
Posted by Joseph Riggio on Saturday, August 26, 2006A different kind of world demands a different kind of wisdom to produce your outcomes ... go way beyond either “New Age Thinking” of “Unbridled Capitalism” ... remember “these are the good old times ...
Hello all,
Some people think, "all the good times have come and gone" I think nothing can be further from the truth. However I do think it funny that earlier today I was thinking about writing an article (or a book maybe) with the title,
"The "New Age" Has Come And Gone - And You Missed It!"
What I wanted to write about has to do with the pseudo-scientific/pseudo-magical thinking that I so often associate with those of the "New Age" persuasion. This position can be summed up as in the kind of thinking that suggests,
"If you just believe strong enough and hold onto the good feelings that everything will work out you'll be fine ... BETTER THAN FINE ... everything you've ever hoped or dreamed for will be drawn to you by the powerful attraction of the "love" and "light" you hold in your being and "manifest" right before your eyes."
Well you can count this as equal to the bullsh-t line that, "Capitalism will cure all the ills of humanity." While I am no fan of pseudo-scientific/pseudo-magical "New Age" thinking, I no more of a fan of the "Unbridled Capitalism Club". These positions are just more of the kind of polarity positioning that I find so prevalent in the way the mass media wants to present what they call the "NEWS" and how so many people, especially supposed intellectuals, want to carry on their "discussions" these days.
Yet what I'm finding from my clients when they put their hard-earned money on the table makes it simpler for me to hold an opinion about what really seems to count for more and more folks who are committed to building better lives.
Learning how-to hold a position that allows for noticing "What Works" in the face of all evidence, especially what seems to be evidence to the contrary, and connecting that to "real" skills that produce outcomes - both on one's own and with others - makes all the difference when it really counts.
This has absolutely nothing to do with "just believing in the face of all evidence" nor "unbridled capitalism that justify any and all behaviors intended to produce results at any cost" - it has more to do with how-to operate in relationship to the total system producing outcomes to the greater benefit of all.
This doesn't position getting your outcomes in conflict with the total system, nor suggest that getting your outcomes has any negative overtones in regard to the total system. Let's begin from a different presumption entirely - when you are successful in producing your outcomes as you are acting from within and in regard to the total system, you benefit personally and the system-at-large benefits as well when you succeed.
What you'll find unique in the statement above has to do with the integration of the idea that you can act from a position that organizes you action to produce your outcomes from within and in regard to the system. I'd argue that starting from this position you are residing at the center of a "socially responsible" initiative - one that honors both you personally and the system that contains you.
What makes this position so powerful includes at least two specific aspects:
From this position you are considering both the impact of your actions on and in the system you are operating within (and in relation to), and the impact of the system upon your actions as well. When you hold yourself "at the center of the world" or even "as the center of the world" you are in a powerful position from which to direct your actions to produce specific and potent effects in the system. You are also in a much more powerful position to update in relation to "real-time" information/data as you perceive and experience it emerging in the environment/context.
This last bit about "updating in relation to real-time information/data as you perceive and experience it emerging in the environment/context" holds a real key to being successful in producing your outcomes.
In my mind and from my direct observation this makes what I'm proposing almost diametrically opposed to both "New Age Thinking" and "Unbridled Capitalism" - offering a path that works based on "What Works" as the starting point. Then it continually points to "updating" as the essential quality that allows you to take the precise action in any given moment most likely to produce your outcome - regardless of how you "feel" about doing it or by ignoring the total effect in the system-at-large.
By acting according to the evidence in regard to "What Works" and continuously updating in relation to producing the outcome you move beyond the limiting positions represented by "New Age Thinking" and/or "Unbridled Capitalism" - and this sounds like a good idea to me in these perilous times.
For instance, when half the country wants to pull out of Iraq immediately and damn the consequences, and the other half wants to stay in Iraq indefinitely and damn the consequences - it seems to me that considering the system-at-large from an extraordinary perspective in relation to holding either of those two positions might be called "wisdom" of a different kind.
I'm no political scholar, nor have I ever claimed to be one ... but I do know a bit about how exquisite performers create exquisite performances and they always begin from "What Works" ... and then choose to hold that position, making decisions and taking action, especially in face of all evidence to the contrary - including those who would damn them for their "unreasonableness" in continuing to move in a direction that sometimes only they alone can see.
