The Ancient Art of Success
Posted by Joseph Riggio on Monday, August 28, 2006Learning how to operate “in the future” based upon what I call the “Trajectory of INTENT” may be the most ancient art of success of them all - it seems the Chinese have know about this, well ... forever.
Good Morning,
As usual I'm scouting about the Internet checking the news of the day - as always more than I can possibly attend to let alone keep up with, so I do the next best thing - I selectively scan. Today I found an older posting on Apple's Blog, Report on iPod Manufacturing from August 17th.
Apple was informed of potential violations of their Supplier Code of Conduct in a manufacturing facility in China. So I thought I'd check it out. And, HOLY COW! what I find myself reading! About a "manufacturing facility" in China (where specifically in China wasn't mentioned) that supports over 200,000 employees!!! Can you even imagine this ... a "manufacturing facility" that supports over 200,000 employees?
I mentioned this to my wife and she said, "I think it's scary ... that's what we going to have to compete with." I understand that people respond this way when they hear this kind of information ... it can be a bit overwhelming (to say the least, eh?). However my response was, That's what we ARE competing with ... right now ... it's already happened!"
What I find so amazing about this ... a "manufacturing facility" that supports over 200,000 people, with factories, employee housing, banks, post office, hospital, supermarkets, recreational facilities, and thirteen different restaurants (in addition to the ten cafeterias on campus) ... has to do with how this happens in China. I've traveled to China for business and pleasure many times. One of the cities I've visited has been ShenZhen in Southern China - directly across from Hong Kong and linked by train to that city.
The Chinese government designated ShenZhen an Economic Special Zone in August of 1980 and began building up this city to accommodate what they believed would be a major exchange point, including an import/export hub. By the time I visited in late the 1990's ShenZhen had gone from an idea about what was possible to a small city in China of only about 5,000,000 people! That was within a period of about twenty years of sustained growth from a small regional village (a few hundred thousand residents at best).
Think about this ... the Chinese government "imagines" the way a "manufacturing facility" can be, or an "Economic Special Zone" can be ... and then they build it AND populate them with hundreds of thousands or even millions of people. I don't know if I could find a better example of operating against a "Trajectory of INTENT" on a large scale, a clear case of operating "telelogically."
This represents a radical shift in thinking ... the example above has nothing to do with basing the intention on pre-exisiting historical patterns ... the Chinese decided where they wanted to be, in spite of where they found themselves in the moment. Then based on the future intention held made their plans and took action to realize the outcome they had set.
I'm guessing a few people reading this may be saying to themselves, or even to others should they be discussing what I'm writing about above ... "So what? ... Isn't that how everyone sets goals, makes plans and takes actions to fulfill them? - - - NO! ... ABSOLUTELY NOT! Most people actually set goals first and foremost based on past evidence, NOT ... free of past evidence. Beyond that the planning and acting functions are carried out in relation to past evidence as well.
Operating "teleologically" demands freeing yourself of the demands and pull of "past evidence" ... while at the same time remaining open and sensitive to the current information/data in the environment/context indicating where the system will be going.
This almost defines the break in how I'm operating vs. how many models I've personally experienced are organized. The only absolute exception to this has been my ongoing experience and apprenticeship with Roye (Fraser). As I learned about his "Generative Imprint" model and then became familiar over time with using it as the basis for the work I do with people, it became more and more clear to me how distinct the essence of what I had learned truly was in comparison to some other models I'd come across.
I originally learned about Roye and the work he was doing in my search to continue learning NLP (neurolinguistic programming). In fact I originally went to Roye to continue my study of NLP. I learned from him to think from a different position.
NLP and the traditions associated with NLP ... hypnosis, gestalt therapy, family systems therapy or even "computer programming" ... are designed to address what doesn't work ... using a "problem-solving" approach ... based on a lens of limitations - what I was learning was to operate through a different lens, one based in possibility.
I must have heard a thousand times the distinction between these two approaches referred to by Roye as, "the inhibitory bias" - the lens of limitations, or "the excitatory bias" - the lens of possibility. This "simple" distinction changed my world! Later on I began thinking about this in terms of a "teleological approach" and began to develop what I now refer to as the Trajectory of INTENT.
It would be fair to say that I currently think of the "Trajectory of INTENT" as the basis for transformational success ... it underscores what I believe the Chinese government has done in the two examples I've written about above, separating themselves from the chain of evidence based in the past and constructing a completely new chain based upon where they want to be that doesn't exist yet.
I also think there are steps to take in establishing this kind of absolute separating and the limitation of the "past evidence" being imposed upon the future ... as though was has happened will be the determining factor for what will happen or worst what can happen:
Once you done this, and for all intents and purposes, only when you've done this ... and are ready to commit to what it will take to produce the outcome are you ready to begin. Now ... when you're ready to commit ... BEGIN!

I had heard about 10 years ago how the Chinese were building major manufacturing cities in anticipation of manufacturing that had not happened yet. And no one was actually living in these cities once it was done.
One of the myths I discuss with college students in the entrepreneur club I am a member of......is the myth that the US cannot compete......the myth that the US companies cannot make products cheap enough.
The myth I share with these young entrepreneurs is this.....why not buy into the myth that you can compete....and what big business could actually be doing is just making a much higher profit margin and still charging high prices for the goods.
There was an interview with a young clothing manufacturer entrepreneur in New York on the NBC Today Show recently. Not only was he making a profit.....he was paying the employee’s twice the minimum wage plus full benefits.
So this entrepreneur didn’t buy into the historical data and created his own Trajectory of INTENT.
Just a thought.
My friend Nicola’s father gave her 3 pieces of advice.. incidentally he’s now retired at 55 and living in Hong Kong..
He pulled her up when she said ‘I’m looking forward to going on holiday’ and reminded her..
Don’t wish your life away
Which I intrepret as Instead of thinking it’ll be great when I’m on holiday.. enjoy what’s great and happening now..
He also said
SOMEONE’S GOT TO DO IT WHY NOT YOU…
and the third piece is something all women should learn from the cradle.. but that’s not for here.. ‘-)
It’s this ‘someone’s got to do it why not you’ that I think relates well to what Joseph is proposing and wouldn’t it be cool if more people had that attitude… because IMO
two of the most scary and yukky ideas that float around are..
I can’t do it becaause
and
No one’s ever done that..so how could I possibly.. Who am I to do this..
YUKYUKYUK
instead how about
someone’s got to do it why not you and
who are you not to..
I read something the other day about someone who had achieved great things..he said
I did it because I didn’t know I couldn’t..
So If I had to offer just one thing someone can do to dissolve this pervasive language it would be to be aware of this language when it comes up and whre possible rephrase it in ‘what’s working’ language..instead..
I’m sure we can all find moments whre it’s appropriate to do this.. a tiny act and yet a tiny act that could begin to shift a person from thinking they can’t.... to where they can go all the way into the future and spin new patterns and fabrics..and stir up potent mixesf rom new ingredients.. that they haven’t been discovered YET…
And by the way, Nicola started an IT training company called Oddball some years back and despite most people saying.. you won’t get any business with a name like that… someone had to do it.. and guess what....SHE DID...and she’s so successful that now at the age of 35 that she only works one or two days a week… and is busy dipping into new dreams…

John,
What if you held both positions simultaneously -
“You can’t compete with the Chinese!”
“You can always succeed, inspite of any and all competition!”
Now ... what would have to be true, for “that” to be true?
Get beyond the duality and the world becomes transformed ... MAYBE THAT’S THE “REAL” SECRET!

Peta,
Thanks for the story ... it’s a good one.
“LANGUAGING” is absolutely critical ... that’s why I spend so much time on it - in how I choose to speak to others ... in how I choose to write ... in what I choose to teach in my seminars, workshops and teleseminars ... and in what I choose when doing private coaching - the way something is phrased/spoken/written/taugh/suggested will determine “what it is.”
This goes directly to the idea of “ontology” and the ability to create realitiies based on how we’re delineating the world around us ... LANGUAGE IS THE GREAT DELINEATOR!

Take a look at Spenser Brown’s “Laws of Form” for more about delineating/
Nice story, Peta. It inspires. Thank you.
