Hi and Welcome,

Welcome back to this edition of "Authentically Living" my weekly
newsletter for the week of 3 September 2006.

Once again I'm so pleased to be presenting this week's edition to
you because I've been hard at work all week long steeped in the
Graves Model ... Dr. Clare W. Graves model of evolutionary cultural
value sets. I'm excited about this because I find this model so
fascinating myself, and also because I've found it to be so helpful
and clarifying in terms of giving me an additional lens through
which to perceive the world.

I invite you in to review a bit of this material with me and
consider how it might apply in your own life and in your own
relationships as well ... we are all swimming in the sea of culture.

"The psychology of the mature human being is an unfolding, emergent
, oscillating , spiraling process marked by progressive
subordination of older, lower-order behavior systems to newer,
higher-order systems as man's existential problems change."

I hope that you find some of the value in this week's newsletter
that I've been finding in this material over the last decade or so

1. Graves Times ...

This week I wrote a lot as I've stated above about the model
developed by the American Social Psychologist, Clare W. Graves and
his "Graves Model" as I call it (he didn't call it that BTW ... he
called it, "Emergent, Cyclical, Levels of Existence").

I outlined three of the eight levels that Dr. Graves wrote
extensively about ... and also devoted an entire posting to what
Dr. Graves referred to as "Level Seven." The reason I spent so much
time on this level was because I wanted to demonstrate where I
think "modern" culture/society can be headed ... and I've given a
clear example (in my mind) of a transition state between Dr. Graves
"Level Six" and "Level Seven."

"I'm terribly cognizant of that we seem to be raising a generating
of "pissed off" kids, who are angry with the world they are
inheriting and dismayed at what they perceive their future will be
if they leave things as they've been handed off to them ... the
future this generation imagines and will bring into being will be a
different one than the one their parents envisioned for them ... I
think one of our obligations as the adults holding the reins of
power today includes at least the demand that we give them their
chance to be better than we have. - Joseph Riggio

2: Keeping What's About Others ... About Others

One of the things I find is that most people have a really bad
habit of making what others say about themselves. Let me do my best
to make this one really, really clear ...

"What others say is always first and foremost about them ... EVEN
WHEN WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT YOU IS TRUE."

This is significant because when you allow what others say to
reflect to you the position they are holding vs. what it "means"
about you - you get the advantage of being able to gather
significant information about them.

Let's say that someone says, "Hey it looks like you just rolled out
of bed ... your hair's a mess." ... and let's say it's true ... you
have just rolled out of bed and your hair is a mess. The
outstanding information about them is that they noticed this about
you ... and not something else. How come? How come they noticed
this about you and not that your eyes are brown, or blue ... or
that you are wearing polka-dot pajamas?

The idea that what people notice tells you more about them then
about you ... regardless of what it is that they notice ... let's
you keep the information that is about them remain about them ...
even when it seems like it's about you. Next time someone offers
you information about themselves in the comments they make ask
yourself this question: "What would have to be true of them for
them to have said what they just did (or alternatively do what they
just did)?"
